Description

Using hitherto untold stories and new archival sources, Damien Lewis follows one close-knit band of warriors from the SAS foundation through to the Italian landings - chronicling the extraordinary part they played as the tide of the Second World War truly turned in the Allies' favour.

Military historian Lewis delivers an action-packed account of special operations missions against Nazi forces in Northern Italy during WWII. The frankly astonishing raids that they entered into are brought tremendously to life and are described in such ways and in such detail that you feel you could be sitting in one of the jeeps in North Africa as they blazed up and down the dunes. For decades he worked as a war and conflict reporter for the world’s major broadcasters, reporting from across Africa, South America, the Middle and Far East, winning numerous awards. His widely-acclaimed WWII elite forces series includes The Nazi Hunters, SAS Ghost Patrol, SAS Italian Job/Churchill's Hellraisers and Churchill’s Secret Warriors, which is being developed as a movie series by Paramount Pictures.

So much more than just a war story… While it involves death and suffering and terrible acts of cruelty, it also highlights the enduring qualities of courage and loyalty, of kindness and humanity, resourcefulness and resilience – qualities of which today’s world is much in need. amien Lewis is a number one bestselling author whose books have been translated into over forty languages worldwide. For decades he worked as a war and conflict reporter for the world's major broadcasters, reporting from across Africa, South America, the Middle and Far East and winning numerous awards. They wanted this fearless war hero to lead the assault, piping Highland Laddie as he went – so leaving an indelible British signature to deter Nazi reprisals. This is not a novel or a dramatization, so beloved of Netflix and the BBC, which afford the luxury of speculation and licence. Among his other acclaimed works is Slave, an international bestseller that was adapted into a film and play. Hughie Canavan would have been 22 years old, charging into the Mediterranean in full kit under heavy fire to make it ashore and then to capture a key objective, the Qasmiye Bridge over the Litani River in Syria.

puts tears in your eyes, made me cry when I realized that Eion was killed verse a POW, due to several of the SAS soldiers escaping, kept waiting for him to reappear back at the desert base they use and can't wait for the sequel. While I do owe several of Damien Lewis WW2 books, 'Brothers In Arms', was my first read from the author, it won't be my last, really like his writing a lot and this one is one of my favorite reads of the 2023 books I've read. His descriptions of the missions, from the disastrous Dieppe Raid to the audacious commando raids on occupied Europe, are vivid and immersive, transporting readers to the heart of the action. Moreover, Lewis's ability to contextualize these operations within the broader strategic landscape of World War II is exceptional.
