It’s limitations in my opinion are when you push it since there can be a little too much saturation, making darker skin tones turn a bit orange rather than a nice brown. With a wide range of exposures from bright light to low-light situations, you can create photos that are precisely how you want them. Fine Grain Excellence: The film's fine grain structure ensures sharpness and clarity, even in the most intricate details. I think the Portra 400 has an incredible exposure latitude - it does well indoor under low exposure, and superbly outdoor under high exposure.

Originally there were two variants of Portra: 'Vivid Colour' and 'Natural Colour' but a technical update in 2010 made the difference redundant with a new and improved film. As a part of Kodak's line of Professional color film rolls, the Portra 400 retails for higher than its counterparts in Kodak's line of Everyday Film, like the Gold 200 and Ultramax 400. But outside of those two situations, I would use Portra for photographing while hiking, vintage car shoots, or photographing friends in an outdoor environment. Portra has incredible exposure latitude meaning it does well with overexposure and it also pushes well.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

Wide exposure latitude: The film has a wide exposure latitude, which means it can handle a wide range of lighting conditions. Versatile ISO 400: With an adaptable ISO 400 rating, Portra 400 excels in various lighting conditions, making it your reliable companion for diverse photography adventures. If you’re going to spend the time and money shooting and processing film, I think it’s worth a couple extra bucks up front to make sure you get the best possible results. The resulting photos might not be the best to judge the skin tone that the film produces as the flash went off, but what I can say is that even with the flash off I still like the skin tone it produces. Used this in a Pentacon Six (I can only dream of owning a Hasselblad or Bronnie) and the results were brilliant.I do not recommend portra for indoor flash photography with a point and shoot camera because I have found that my pictures turn out more yellow than expected because of white balance issues. High image quality: Kodak Portra 400 film is known for its fine grain and excellent colour reproduction, which makes it ideal for capturing high-quality images. They mention that it's an excellent product, the pictures are sharp and beautiful, and the tones are great. The 2010 Portra 400 update also incorporated technology from Kodak’s VISION line of motion picture films (see listings below).

This film essentially combined the old NC (natural colour) and VC (vivid colour) versions while incorporating some technical advances from the Kodak Vision motion picture films. In that same tradition, the new PORTRA 400 Film is the ideal choice for portrait and fashion photography, as well as for nature, travel and outdoor photography, where the action is fast or the lighting can? The 400 speed is the most versatile of the family (there is also a Portra 160 and a Portra 800) and it can be pushed/pulled while still delivering gorgeous results. Maybe you’re using that harsh light to your advantage, or you use a giant window to soften the light. For years, professional photographers have preferred KODAK PROFESSIONAL PORTRA Films because of their consistently smooth, natural reproduction of the full range of skin tones. It’s easily one of the most versatile and forgiving films and on top of that, it produces beautiful results. As much as we raved about how versatile and how much latitude Portra 400 has, it still can be underexposed. no matter the lighting conditions, even under fluorescent, you can expect beautiful, natural colour. In that same tradition, the new PORTRA 400 Film is the ideal choice for portrait and fashion photography, as well as for nature, travel and outdoor photography, where the action is fast or the lighting can't be controlled. Known for its exceptional versatility and unmatched color accuracy, this film transforms ordinary moments into captivating works of art. Delivers spectacular skin tones plus exceptional colour saturation over a wide range of lighting conditions. In fact it was just one corner of the box which was a bit bashed, but the five films were fine, sealed in their foil packs.
