Modine is supported early by breakout performances from Vincent D’Onofrio, as a fellow recruit named “Gomer” who can’t quite cut it in training, and Lee Ermey, as their ramrod gunnery sergeant and drill instructor. A little gunfire seemed slightly distorted, but for the most part, these aspects of the track were clean and accurate, and they worked well.

Everything in this 4K presentation just feels so much more accurate here with the addition of HDR10 form of high dynamic range. New theatrical 70mm film prints were shown in select theaters for its 50th anniversary – which I witnessed – sourced from a new 8K master from the original 65mm negative. Low Frequency Extension: Bass is usually reserved for score and music cues, but explosions, helicopters, and some gunfire make their presence known too. Joker tells his superior about a rumor that a large-scale attack may be launched during the Tet holiday. He’s best known for in the latter half of the film for wearing a peace sign button on his uniform and having “Born to Kill” written on his helmet. Warner aren't really up to much on the extras front - notwithstanding the option to pick up a Collector's Set that comes in a pretty box with a poster, some art cards and a booklet. Jacket featured a fairly subdued palette for the most part, and the disc replicated these hues well.

What follows is horrifying to say the least and Pyle has one of the most insane mental breakdowns ever committed to film. Some saw it as a series of short films tied together by an overriding anti-war tale, while others found it more cohesive in form. Clarity/Detail: From the moment we are seeing the recruits getting their hair cut, Full Metal Jacket is full of life. Kubrick would be utterly in his element during this first half, nailing the performances and dialogue, with his Vietnam-based second half much more traditional in its depiction of soldiers scrambling around the battlefront desperately trying to stay in one piece, only coming alive for its final act amidst the atypical setting of a wartorn city. His team, Animal Mother (Adam Baldwin), Eightball (Dorian Harewood) and others are welcoming to Joker and Rafterman and they tour together, fighting off the Vietnamese and facing horrors of war at every turn. Full Metal Jacket isn’t an easy film to watch – it’s downright unpleasant at points – but there’s no denying the film’s strengths: the terrific performances, the believable dialogue and the staggering production values. The audio commentary is definitely worth giving a listen, if you’ve never taken the time to do so, now that you can while watching the film in 4K.

presentation seems like a fair compromise that the director would have likely approved; after all, 1. It may not quite be top-tier Kubrick, but it's damn close, and a tremendous anti-war movie nonetheless. dba Freestar (“Freestar”) for the purposes of placing certain advertising on the site, and Freestar will collect and use certain data for advertising purposes. During the 30-minute carryover featurette “Between Good and Evil,” you’ll discover many of the backstories to Kubrick’s war epic, including how Vincent D’Onofrio was working as a bouncer at the Hard Rock Café when stage actor friend Matthew Modine and his wife walked into the restaurant and mentioned he was preparing for a Kubrick film.Upon graduating, one of the recruits, Joker (Modine), is thrown into the war at the height of the Tet Offensive. All four people seem to have had a different experience on the set of the film and working with Kubrick, but after the boot camp sequence, two of the four people are no longer heard.
