About this deal

How do Chromaflow pencils compare to colour pencils in Derwent’s Professional Quality range; Coloursoft, Procolour, Lightfast? The smooth, creamy laydown of opaque colour is compatible with oil mediums and produces a paint-like effect when dissolved with solvent. Lightfast pencils have a strong point for ease of sharpening so are ideal for detailed drawings and defining negative space. If you come across any with grey barrels, these are a very old range and you will find them poor compared to the latest version. You'll notice that one of mine in the photo above mentions Cumberland, which could be called ancient.

But don't let this minor hitch deter you! This issue typically comes up only when you're heavily diluting the colours. Even then, it's not a common problem. When you're using these pencils in their dry form, and then adding water to your paper, you're more than likely to be just fine. One thing to keep in mindWhilst these Derwent pencils handle well, the 8mm round barrel does not fit in all power sharpeners and that can be inconvenient. In January 2014, Peter sorted out the pencils he uses regularly into a new set of zipped cases and prepared a small card to remind him of the performance of the contents of each set. The card for Inktense is presented here to show the vibrancy of the colours. There are many pencils available in the Derwent ranges but for this feature I want to focus on the three that I use most within my own work – Derwent’s Drawing, Lightfast & Chromaflow pencils. This doesn’t mean that I don’t also utilise some of the others not mentioned here in my work when I am looking for a specific application but these are more my ‘go to’ pencils. This type of card is invaluable to keep with all your derwent pencils. Watercolour pencils tend to become much stronger on the paper when wet with water, so this guide will help you spot areas and colours to take care with. For artists everywhere, these pencils are a reflection of Derwent heritage, and each pencil is inspected to meet the highest standards

The photo above is of the broken tip of the pencil after using a normal-moderate amount of pressure to colour out this swatch. This was my first pencil-to-paper experience and the tip promptly broke. My later usage of the product for my demo drawing was better but I did have sizable chunks of leads break 3 more times including on this same pencil. Starting with the range that has been around for the longest and those are the Drawing pencils. The Drawing range has a distinctive velvety finish and come in a limited but beautiful natural earthy colour range. These are ideal for wildlife drawings, nature studies and creative atmospheric, evocative landscapes. They are also used for portraiture. Its important that you understand the prices I am listing here are prices put forward before Derwent have even officially announced the Derwent Chromaflow 36, 48 and 72. The reason I am highlighting this is because traditionally, when new products are released the prices shortly reduce. Sharpening issues aside and as I pointed out this only occurred in two or three of the 72 pencils I used, I have really enjoyed using the Derwent Chromaflow and now the range has been extended can see the Derwent Chromaflow being a real hit for Derwent. Don’t get me wrong, I still stand by my initial assessment and think that had Derwent of remained at 24 in the Chromaflow range, I only feel it would have frustrated people. Derwent Chromaflow pencils provide artists with an affordable professional quality product which is easy to layer and blend thanks to the richly pigmented smooth texture, providing a velvety laydown. The only differences between the cores of these Derwent pencils and the Artists range, is that they are thinner in the Studios. A recent collection of pencils with a higher percentage of oil than wax. This is unusual for Derwent as they have for years concentrated on pencils with a wax based core. This small range of 24 natural colours are all totally light stable. These wax based Derwent pencils have a soft, creamy texture and are ideal for working over the top of harder pencils, such as the Artist range. They come in tins of 12 or 24.

The original formula was very low on fade resistance in half of the colours and the range was therefore not recommended, but an upgrade has resulted in only 4 of the colours now having a low blue wool scale rating. At the core of their range are the hardest of the pencils and some of the longest in their production.

For a new pencil line promoted for professional artists, I think that it is a shame that the opportunity was not taken to follow the example of other manufacturers and go for higher lightfast levels. I suggest that anyone using these seriously would be advised to mark the lower LF numbers on the pencils with clear labeling as I have done in the photo above. Hi Lisa, this is a very helpful article – thank you for sharing your experience in such detail! Would you mind sharing what paper you use that gets 12 layers of colour pencil? ( from your chart) Don’t confuse permanence with lightfastness, there are still a number of lower rated pigments here, though not too many. The relative softness of the core enables strong laydown of colour but there is a need to be careful as over sharpening the point will cause it to easily crumble which is wasteful. Blend, layer and shade easier with Derwent Chromaflow Pencils. They have been formulated with rich pigments to deliver a bold, vibrant laydown

The colour range in the 72 Procolour pencils is slightly different from Coloursoft so a combination of the two lines will give over a hundred unique colours. You will note the very strong colours involved and the high pigmentation. Most colours show up much stronger after the addition of water. The first column of the chart shows the colours in their dry state. The second shows the addition of water, first in concentration and then as a sweep of a small amount of the wet colour off into a paler, less concentrated form. As you can see from the Chromaflow, right from the get go, the very first light layer, the pigment strength is tremendous. I always apply 5 layers as it is generally considered a good idea to apply at least 5 layers before using Odourless Mineral Spirits. The final column is a single heavy and the paper used for this test was the Hahnemühle Agave Watercolor paper, this paper has a nice texture to it, 70% Agave and 30% Cotton.
