About this deal

Wipe off the excess conditioner with a shop cloth after 10–15 minutes. The conditioner needs a little bit of time to soak into the wood. Give the wood at least 10 minutes before running your shop cloth over the surface. Wipe in long, sweeping strokes to ensure you don’t leave any streaks on your wood. Keep wiping your piece of pine until there aren’t any wet spots left. [7] X Research source By applying this solution on pine wood first, you’ll get naturally darker, deep colors as a base to stain on. To upgrade this solution and create even more spectacularly saturated nuances, add 2 tablespoons of coffee grounds to the solution before you seal the jar. And I think if I had added one more very thin coat of stain before the polyurethane, it might have reduced the grain even more and evened out some of the blotchiness.

The steel wool and vinegar solution are effortless to make and apply. Just place 2 #0000 steel wool pads in a clean glass jar and add 2 cups of white vinegar (enough to cover the steel wool). Seal the mixture with a lid and leave it away in a dark room for 2-3 days. If you’re about to stain finished pine, you will need to sand off any existing finish with medium-grit sandpaper. If you are working with new pine, then fine-grit sandpaper will do just fine. Another way I’ve found to deal with stain and getting just the right color is to make and use a wood toner. This post from pneumatic addict on how to make your own wood toner is great. You can make either oil based or water based. We work with a lot of pine and so we decided to test out ten different wood stains to show you what our favorites are for pine! That’s a lovely finish on pine. I’m sure you noticed they were using a water-based pre-conditioner and dye rather than an oil-based pre-conditioner and stain and they still evened color further with glaze. The shellac wash after the dye was likely to keep the glaze and dye from bleeding together.

How to Stain Pine: Tips for Prepping, Staining, and Sealing

Clean the sawdust off the surface with a damp sponge. Wet a soft sponge and wring out the excess water. Run your sponge over the surface of the pine from end to end with heavy, sweeping strokes in one direction. What You Will Need To Follow This Tutorial You get the idea, right? And I’m fine with it looking old and beautifully aged, like a well-loved antique, but Idon’t want rustic.Somehow that makes sense in my mind. 🙂 Sanding helps open up the pores in natural wood surfaces, which will allow the stain to set in better.I’m going to finish my floors with a couple coats of paint BASE for an invisible, water proof matte finish. Rustic floors are one thing, but I get what you mean about a rustic table! Pine is one of the cheapest woods to work with, so it’s super popular for beginner woodworking projects. If you’ve used more than three coats and the piece still hasn’t reached the shade you want, consider switching to a darker stain. We believe that woodworking is an art form. Our goal is to inspire and educate others who share our passion for woodworking. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced woodworker, we believe that there is always something new to learn.

That was actually part of the reason I used it over the paint. I do not have a good hand with poly, either spraying or brushing. I knew if I tried just poly, I’d end-up with drips or bubbles or something. Also, I was painting something red…which refuses to harden on its own for months because there’s something about drying time with red tinting, and I wanted a harder finish over it.Apply additional coats of stain if you want a darker color. If you want a deeper shade on your piece of pine, brush on a second coat the same way you applied the first one. After another few minutes, use a clean cloth to wipe off the excess. Keep adding more thin layers of stain until you’re satisfied with the appearance. [13] X Research source The more you let the steel wool and vinegar solution age, the darker colors you will get (the solution can be stored for a full year). 2 – Look for wood stain test samples Level the wood’s surface with 80-grit or 120-grit sandpaper. If you have a bare piece of pine, use 80-grit sandpaper to rough up the surface. If you want to stain over an existing finish, opt for 120-grit sandpaper instead. [1] X Research source Rub the sandpaper on your piece of pine using a wide, looping circular motion. Keep roughing up the surface until the wood doesn’t have any raised bits or pieces. [2] X Expert Source Ryaan Tuttle This was Waterlox with a little bit of Minwax Honeymixed in. I thought this was pretty, and the grain didn’t bother me so much since it didin’t turn a hideous color. But the overall color just wasn’t quite warm enough for me. And it looks too orange-yellow, rather than brown. So you just put one coat of shellac and let it dry. And then do you sand before you stain? Or does it matter? And then you stain, let it dry, and then topcoat with several coats of poly. Is that right? Any other steps that you would add in there?

Working with pinewood is easy, as well as affordable. However, the hardest part comes when you are trying to figure out how to stain pine wood. That’s for a couple of reasons. Work in a well-ventilated space when you use stain or pre-conditioner. If the area where you’re working doesn’t have good ventilation, then put on a respirator while you’re working. When my father built us a baby cradle, he insisted that the way “the pro’s” do a nice finish is to stain the wood (Maple in this case), follow with however many coats of poly you like, then apply a coat of wax over the poly and buff it in with an electric buffer (like one of the ones that fits on an electric drill). His father was a finish carpenter, so who was I to argue with him. 🙂 As stain doesn’t show off the final color immediately, it’s best to avoid unpleasant surprises by testing the wood stain on a scrap piece of wood. However, you also need to make sure the scrap piece of pine has been sanded off properly because this also affects the saturation, as well as the coverage of the stain. Also, since I wrote this original post, I have discovered an AMAZING water-based topcoat. General Finishes High Performance Topcoat is now my go-to topcoat that I use over painted finishes (I used it on my kitchen cabinets, and it’s amazingly durable), as well as stained finishes. I love the matte finish, which has a very slight sheen to it.Sand pine wood first with 80-grit sandpaper followed by 150-grit sandpaper to level and smooth the surface. This was my “control” sample with just plain ole stain on it. I used one coat of Minwax Honey stain. See what I mean about the grain? I think that’s awful. And depending on the stain color, I’ve seen the grain in pine turn yellow, and orange, and even an awful reddish purple. And when you get that much pronounced grain on a large item like a dining table, it looks so incredibly busy. And cheap, in my humble opinion. *I didn’t use pre-stain conditioner, but I’ve worked with pine enough to know that even conditioner can’t salvage pine enough for my taste when it comes to light and medium-toned stain colors. It works beautifully with dark stains, though (Rust-Oleum, not Minwax). Brush 2 layers of polyurethane clear coat onto the pine. Stir your polyurethane to make sure it’s properly mixed. Dip a bristle brush into the clear coat and apply the polyurethane in a thin layer using long, broad strokes. Make sure you coat the entire surface of the wood to seal it. Give the polyurethane a day to dry completely before applying a second coat. [16] X Research source You are inspired! I would not have the patience to go through all of those steps…so glad you have done it and given your steps so clearly.
